The Ultimate Guide to DTG Printing: From Technology to T-Shirts

Introduction: Beyond the Hype—What is DTG Printing, Really?

The Dye Sub Effect In today’s fast paced world of custom apparel, Dye Sublimation is flourishing due to its high-quality, color, and small batch benefits. Companies require means of producing detailed designs without purchasing vast numbers at once.

This is where Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing comes in. It functions much like your home printer, but differently calibrated for T-shirts, hoodies and other fabrics. A printer sprays eco-friendly inks directly onto the fabric and produces vivid, high-resolution prints with incredible clarity.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about DTG printing. We’ll walk you through how it works, compare it to screen printing, tell you which fabrics work best and even explain how you can prepare your artwork for success.

The DTG Printing Process: A Step-by-Step Journey from File to Fabric

To learn about DTG print quality, you should understand the intricate process that goes into it. There are four main stages to the process, which transform a digital design into wearable art. Every little bit counts when you are making and investment in a bright, durable and professional garment.

  1. Step 1: The Digital Blueprint – Artwork Preparation
The process begins with your digital file. We see that the artwork is high resolution (300 DPI is best) and fits the proper format. This precautionary step helps avoid any fuzzy or low-res designs.

  2. Step 2: The Critical Foundation – Garment Pre-Treatment
The garment is coated with a solution before printing. This is crucial for dark clothing. This treatment creates a smooth surface so that the water-based inks sit on top of the fibers rather than being absorbed too deeply. It also has the beneficial effect of making the white (used for dark clothes) base layer look bright and firm, so colors pop out.

  1. Step 3: The Magic Happens – The Printing Process
The treated garment is placed on the DTG printer’s flat surface. Then the machine sprays ink directly onto the fabric, layer by layer, exactly matching your digital design. This technology is a key part of modern On-demand manufacturing and digital printing, allowing for great efficiency.

Step 4: Locking it In – Curing the Ink
The ink is wet after printing. The item is transferred to a heat press or dryer. The ink is then cured by the heat and pressure of the press, thereby fusing the ink to the fabric. Last but not least, this step also makes sure your design can survive lots and lots of wear and wash.

The Great Debate: DTG Printing vs. Screen Printing

I get the question all the time “Should I go with DTG or Screen Printing?” The answer is: It depends on what you’re looking for: your design complexity, order size and what you want the final product to feel like. Both are great but achieving different goals.

A shortened version of the main points:

Feature

DTG Printing

Screen Printing

Best for

Complex, multi-color designs, small orders, photos

Simple designs, limited colors, large bulk orders

Color Detail

Photorealistic, unlimited colors, smooth gradients

Limited colors, solid blocks, hard to do gradients

Feel on Garment (Hand)

Soft, breathable, ink is infused into the fabric

Thicker layer of ink on top of the fabric

Setup Cost

Virtually none; print directly from a file

High; a separate screen must be created for each color

Cost per Unit (Large Volume)

Stays relatively consistent; less cost-effective in bulk

Significantly lower as a quantity increase

Durability

Good; modern inks offer excellent washability

Excellent; very long-lasting with a robust finish

Best Fabrics

Natural fibers like 100% cotton, some cotton blends

Versatile; works well on cotton, polyesters, and blends

Your choice should be based on your project goals.

If you own an e-commerce brand releasing products with elaborate or photo-realistic designs you want to offer on demand, DTG is the technique for you. It affords you the freedoms and looks for small-batch brewing.

But if you require 500 t-shirts with a simple two-color logo for a corporate event, Then you can’t find a better way to print them for less money than screen printing. It is also the best choice for big orders, simple design.

The Fabric Factor: Choosing the Right Canvas for Your DTG Masterpiece

The Fabric Factor: Choosing the Right Canvas for Your DTG Masterpiece

Even the finest DTG printer can’t produce a great print on the wrong fabric. The relationship between water-based ink and textile fibers is a science. Choosing the right fabric is crucial to getting professional results.

We have learned through our 27 years of experience that a fat design on the wrong fabric is a recipe for disaster. Here is our expert guide to what works and what doesn’t:

  • Highly Recommended: 100% Ringspun Cotton
It is the ideal option for DTG printing. Ringspun cotton’s close, smooth weave provides the perfect surface for ink, so prints appear bright, crisp, and feel as soft as a kitten’s belly. Ink penetrates the cotton so that your final design will appear crisp and clear.

  • Use with Consideration: Cotton/Polyester Blends (e.g., 50/50, CVC)
Blends may or may not work with DTG, and if so, with varying results. Because ink doesn’t adhere to fibers in blends, designs will appear more faded or vintage. If that is what you are going for, this can be a fantastic style choice as well, but it won’t be as pure white as 100% cotton.

  • Avoid for DTG: 100% Polyester, Nylon, and Treated Fabrics
DTG’s inks are water-based and designed for natural fibers. They don’t adhere well to synthetic fabrics such as polyester, resulting in weak colors, washing out and uneven appearances. If the fabric has waterproof or moisture-wicking treatment, the ink won’t absorb into the fabric, and we will be not able to print on it.

For the brightest, most detailed prints, always choose 100% ringspun cotton.

An Insider's Guide to Preparing Artwork for Flawless DTG Prints

As the old adage goes, garbage in, garbage out – never is this more evident than in the realm of DTG printing. Quality of your final product is determined well before it ever gets printed. Good artwork preparation is the most essential thing you can control to ensure that what you envision appears perfectly on fabric. Here are our expert tips:

Resolution is King: 300 DPI is the Standard

Create the artwork at 300 DPI at the exact size it should be printed at. Images with a low resolution (like 72 DPI web images) will appear pixelated and blurry if they’re enlarged and printed. Always start with high-quality files.

File Format Matters: PNG is Your Best Friend

A PNG (Portable Network Graphics) file is more ideal for DTG printing than a JPEG file. The reason for that being, PNG has support for transparency. However, with PNG, only your design is printed, no background. A JPEG never is a transparent image, there’s always a block of color (white usually), that the printer will try to do as a solid color in your garment.

Color Space: The RGB vs. CMYK Myth for DTG

This confuses many designers. Even though DTG printers use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) color ink, it’s generally best to submit your files in RGB (Red, Green Blue) mode. The printer’s software has been set up to translate RGB files into its own, proprietary CMYK inks in order that colors be as accurate as possible. Pre RGB-Converted – CMYK It is possible that when sending your files converted in CMYK can lose their strength and color. Believe in the process, and RGB.

Designing for the Fabric Color

Even when you only have a grey shirt you are working with, think of the tshirt’s colour as the base to your print. Yellow ink on a blue shirt may appear greenish. While a white base layer does wonders on dark garments, it’s a good idea to consider how your design colors are going to be affected by the garment color (especially with subtle colors and gradients).

Beware of “Floating” Details and Fine Transparencies

Thinner lines, or semi transparent “glow” effects are can be difficult for the DTG printers. These could potentially lack sufficient ink to achieve clear printing or bond properly with the pretreatment. For best results, be sure to use solid design elements without too much feathering. Clearer always prints better than hazy if you are in doubt. Properly preparing digital files for print helps avoid costly reprints.

After finding out about the process, technology and industry best practices, you’re likely to be considering if DTG is for you. It really all comes down to the goals you have.

DTG (Direct-to-garment) With DTG Printing, you have the freedom to print just about anything you can imagine onto fabric, unlike screen printing where the image is limited by the stencil.

FAQ

DTG printing is a digital process that sprays eco-friendly ink directly onto fabric, similar to a home printer but for garments. Unlike screen printing, DTG excels with complex designs and small batches without setup costs, while screen printing is better for large orders with simple designs.

100% ringspun cotton is ideal for DTG printing as it provides the best surface for ink absorption and vibrant results. Cotton/polyester blends can work but produce a more vintage look, while 100% polyester and synthetic fabrics should be avoided.

Create artwork at 300 DPI in the exact print size, use PNG format to maintain transparency, submit files in RGB color space, and avoid extremely thin lines or subtle transparency effects for optimal DTG printing results.

  1. Modern DTG prints offer good durability with excellent washability, though screen printing typically provides a more robust, longer-lasting finish. The heat curing process permanently bonds DTG ink to fabric fibers for lasting results.

DTG printing is cost-effective for small batches, complex multi-color designs, and on-demand production. While the cost per unit remains relatively consistent regardless of quantity, screen printing becomes more economical for large orders with simple designs.
